ALBANY, N.Y., September 4, 2008 ‹ Barbara Kelly Changizi, M.D., has joined the Parkinson's Disease and Movement Disorders Center in the department of neurology at Albany Medical Center and has been named assistant professor of neurology at Albany Medical College.

Dr. Changizi earned her medical degree from the Duke University School of Medicine in Durham, N.C. Following an internship in internal medicine at Huntington Memorial Hospital in Pasadena, CA, she completed her residency training in neurology at the University of California Los Angeles and a fellowship in movement disorders at the Parkinson's disease and Movement Disorders Center at Albany Medical Center. Dr. Changizi holds two bachelor's degrees-one in mathematics from the University of Virginia in Charlottesville and the other in neurobiology from the University of Maryland in College Park.

While attending the University of Maryland, Dr. Changizi worked with Dr. Christopher Cherniak in computational neuroanatomy.  After earning her bachelor's degree, she was awarded a Predoctoral Intramural Research Training Award Fellowship to study for one year with Dr. Robert Desimone in the Laboratory of Neuropsychology at the National Institute of Mental Health in Bethesda, Md. She continued her research endeavors at Duke University Medical Center, where as a medical student she was awarded a Howard Hughes Research Fellowship grant, and studied the genetics of juvenile myoclonic epilepsy in the Laboratory of Epilepsy Research under Dr. James McNamara.

Dr. Changizi's interests include the genetics of tic disorders, and deep brain stimulation for essential tremor and Parkinson's disease.  Dr. Changizi sees patients with a variety of movement disorders including tremor, Parkinson's disease, Huntington's disease, tics, restless leg syndrome, and dystonia.
